Anesthesia for Pets

Learn more about how we administer anesthesia for dogs and cats.

Slide Anesthesia We realize the worry that can come with having your pet under anesthesia. That is why ensuring the comfort and safety of your pet while under anesthesia is of utmost importance to us. Central Animal Hospital utilizes modern equipment and highly trained team members to carefully monitor your pet before, during, and after anesthesia, keeping your furry family member safe during the entire process.

Slide Digital X-Rays (Radiographs) If the results are non-remarkable, the procedure will continue. If there are any concerns, your veterinarian will contact you to discuss the results and with recommendations, which may include tailored anesthetic protocols or in the rare case postponing the procedure. In-house Laboratory Your pet will be monitored with equipment and human oversight throughout the procedure. In-house Laboratory Once the procedure is complete and your pet is in recovery one of our team members will contact you to let you know how your pet is doing and set up a discharge appointment. In-house Laboratory Your pet will receive sedation medications to help them relax and to preventively control pain. Electrocardiogram (EKG) Every pet will have an IV catheter placed that will provide fluid support. The IV will give us direct access to that vein to give medications needed and in case of an emergency. The fluid will support the pet throughout the procedure and help maintain your pet’s blood pressure. From there, a liquid anesthetic will be given IV and then an endotracheal tube placed. Once the tube is in place your pet will be put on a gas inhalant anesthetic. Prior to anesthesia three things are performed:
  • A physical examination to identify any new or existing medical condition that could complicate the procedure and compromise your pet’s health.
  • An EKG (electrocardiogram) that is used to detect any irregularities in your pet’s heart rhythm.
  • Blood tests, which allow us to assess your pet’s organ functions and detect any underlying medication conditions that would comprise the procedure.
Here is what you can expect when your pet needs to undergo anesthesia at Central Animal Hospital:
